Trot lines baited with small pieces of fish or worms are used to capture fish for data collection purposes. The St. Louis District, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers works in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation to survey fish species on the Mississippi River as part of the ongoing restoration efforts geared at improving the lake sturgeon population. The lake sturgeon is the oldest and largest native fish species with a lifespan of 55 to 120 years.
