This shovel nose sturgeon caught while doing surveys below the Melvin Price Locks and Dam was measured and checked for a tag before it was returned to the Mississippi River. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Missouri Department of Conservation are studying the populations to improve habitat of fish species in the Mississippi River. The shovelnose sturgeon is the smallest species of freshwater sturgeon native to North America.
