Flying by Maple Island just below the Melvin Price Locks and Dam in West Alton, Missouri, the American white pelican is easily identified in flight with their big white bodies and black primary flight feathers. American white pelicans are very graceful flyers and can often be seen flying in groups soaring high on thermals.
