George, Chief of Staff of the Army, awards a challenge coin to Staff Sergeant Rafael Martinez, assigned to 10th Division Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (LI), at the Po Valley Chapel on Fort Drum, New York, July 16, 2024. Martinez was recognized for his time as a battalion Army Emergency Relief representative and raised over $2,000, and currently serves as land and ammo noncommissioned officer, battalion funeral honors noncommissioned officer in charge and the battalion defense travel system expert. A military custom known as a challenge coin is presented to a recipient to recognize and honor excellence and hard work, as well as fosters a sense of unit pride, and enhances esprit de corps.
