PHILIPPINE SEA (Aug. 23, 2024) – Guided missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65) conducts underway replenishment alongside Royal New Zealand Navy sustainment vessel HMNZA Aoteara. With the safe transfer of over 200,000 gallons F-76 fuel, combined operations with maritime partners continue to expand the reach and sustainment of forward deployed units like Benfold across the Indo-Pacific Area of Responsibility. Commissioned in July 2020, HMNZA Aoteara bears the indigenous Māori name for the country of New Zealand. Aotearoa is commonly translated "the land of the long white cloud" in the Māori dialect and is now commemorated in the Royal New Zealand Navy’s largest commissioned vessel. Benfold is forward-deployed and assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the Navy’s largest DESRON and the U.S. 7th Fleet’s principal surface force. (U.S. Navy photo by Fireman Yeudiel S. Bernal).
