University of Florida's "Croc Docs", biologist and graduate student, Brandon Welty, positions himself snare in hand to capture and tag the alligator in the foreground. You can see its eyes shining red in the darkness of the night, alligators have tapetum lucidum at the back of each eye – a structure that reflects light into the photoreceptor cells to make the most of low light.
Alligators are seen as indicator species because they are very sensitive to changes in their environment. They are an effective way to monitor the ecological health of the everglades.
Collecting field data is extremely important to RECOVER (REstoration COordination & VERification) which is made up of a multi-agency team of scientists, modelers, planners and resource specialists. The information they collect and synthesize informs the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). (U.S. Army Photo by Brigida Sanchez)
