Brig. Gen. Lenny Williams, the Assistant Adjutant General - Army of the Illinois National Guard and the Commander of the Illinois Army National Guard, presents Staff Sgt. Francisco Orozco with an award for being the Illinois Army National Guard's Recruiting and Retention Noncommissioned Officer of the Year at the recruiting battalion's Nov. 16 awards ceremony in Peoria. The 2011 Prospect High School graduate was an overweight metal band bass player with a child on the way when he decided to join the Illinois Army National Guard. He had to lose 60 pounds and a neck tattoo and it took him a year before he was able to enlist in 2017. Now, as a recruiter in the Schaumburg area, he uses his lived experience as a way to educate people about the benefits of joining the Illinois Army National Guard. In fiscal year 2024, he enlisted 35 Soldiers into the Army National Guard.
