MCAS IWAKUNI, Japan (Jan. 6, 2025) — Steelworker 3rd Class Kevin Caskey, project safety representative, and Equipment Operator 2nd Class Clayton Kreitler, project supervisor, monitor heavy equipment operations for the MCAS Iwakuni Cap and Close Landfill project alongside Cmdr. Travis Brinkman, commanding officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 (NMCB-3), and others. The project involves capping a 13-acre landfill, excavating and relocating waste, installing an interim cover system, and constructing temporary stormwater and erosion control features to mitigate Bird Aircraft Strike Hazards. NMCB-3 serves as the stand-in engineering force for Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, executing high-quality construction operations and supporting major combat operations in the Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility.
