U.S. Navy corpsman Petty Officer 3rd Class Ferik Roman assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan, is participating in his first Balikatan exercise. "Passing on my medical knowledge to our allies is what this is all about ... not only does it help keep their forces safe, it helps keep my Marines safe when the two nations are working together," Roman said. Balikatan 2013 is an annual Philippines-U.S. military bilateral training exercise and humanitarian assistance engagement. Balikatan is a Filipino term that means "shoulder-to-shoulder" and characterizes the spirit of the exercise and the Philippines-U.S. alliance. (Department of Defense photo by U.S. Air Force Tech.
