U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sandra Gaines, from Peoria, Ill., meets Elden Campbell, a former professional basketball player, at Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar, June 2. "I have been watching the Lakers for a long time," said Gaines. Campbell was a first-round Lakers pick in a 1990 NBA draft. He finished his career with the Los Angeles team as a leading shot-blocker. Campbell was part of a team of five former NBA and WNBA players traveling to military installations in Southwest Asia to meet deployed service members. The five-star team included: Elden Campbell, Rushia Brown, Tom Gugliotta, Semeka Randall and Shawn Bradley. "It's great they took the time to come all the way out here, out of the kindness of their hearts," said Gaines. "This is my first deployment and I have been fortunate to meet a lot of sports and television stars."
