Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Kristin Toler, Platoon 4024, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, crawls through wet sand on a combat training course as part of Basic Warrior Training on July 9, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits must use teamwork on every part of the course, including while crossing moats, crawling under concertina wire and climbing over walls. Basic Warrior Training introduces recruits to individual field skills and provides an opportunity to develop self-confidence. Toler, 20, from New Bern, N.C., is scheduled to graduate Aug. 2, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
