Rct. Cameo Stevens, Platoon 4025, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, responds to commands given by Sgt. Kayla Cerda, a drill instructor with Platoon 4025, while on a combat training course as part of Basic Warrior Training on July 9, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Cerda, 24, from Chicago, supervised as Stevens, 20, from Sacramento, Calif., attempted to cross the bridge correctly. Recruits had to stay alert for simulated enemy fire while they maneuvered under and over various obstacles. Basic Warrior Training introduces recruits to individual field skills and provides an opportunity to develop self-confidence. Papa Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 2, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
