Recruits of Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, begin the first portion of the combat fitness test, an 880-yard sprint, Aug. 6, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The other two events of the CFT are ammunition can lifts and the maneuver under fire, which is a timed 300-yard shuttle run in which recruits perform a series of combat-related tasks. The CFT, which simulates a wide range of physical challenges one might face in combat, evaluates strength, stamina, agility and coordination. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 23, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
