Rct. Patrick Hatcher, Platoon 1056, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, crawls through a portion of the combat fitness test Aug. 6, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The CFT was implemented into an annual training requirement for Marines in October 2009 to ensure Marines stay ready for the physical rigors of combat operations. The CFT, which simulates a wide range of physical challenges one might face in combat, evaluates strength, stamina, agility and coordination. Hatcher, a 21-year-old native of Hortense, Ga., is scheduled to graduate Aug. 23, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
