Rct. Patrick Hatcher picks up Rct. Christopher Alston during a combat fitness test Aug. 6, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Hatcher, a 21-year-old native of Hortense, Ga., carried Alston, a 19-year-old native of Chapel Hill, N.C., both with Platoon 1056, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, to simulate carrying a casualty in combat. The CFT, which simulates a wide range of physical challenges one might face in combat, evaluates strength, stamina, agility and coordination and is an annual training requirement for all Marines. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 23, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
