Evans Army Community Hospital welcomed its newest members of the Medical Department Activity-Fort Carson family, Col. Eric S. Edwards and his wife Renee during a change of command ceremony held at Founders Field May 22. During the ceremony, the outgoing commander, Col. Patrick M. Garman, relinquished his command to Edwards.

“Renee and I are humbled to have arrived to the home of the busiest division in our Army, the 4th Infantry Division,” said Edwards. “Last time I was here was a far cry from the green here on the parade field.”

While Edwards and his wife recently arrived, he is no stranger to Fort Carson or the surrounding communities. Edwards served here early in his career first as a private first class and later as a second lieutenant.

The change of command ceremony was presided over by Regional Health Command-Central Commander Maj. Gen. Thomas R. Tempel, Jr.

“I want you to know the caliber of this organization and the leadership we are honoring here today,” said Tempel. “The team here at Evans ACH have demonstrated their commitment to the readiness of the 4th Infantry Division Soldiers in their care and the medical professionals that treat them.”

It was this commitment to readiness that earned Garman the Legion of Merit award which was presented by Tempel. Garman’s wife, Kim, was also recognized with the Department of the Army Outstanding Civilian Service Award for her work with Tumbleweeds at the Mountain Post, a center for artistic and creative endeavors.

Two Warrior Transition Battalion companies and two Medical Department Activity-Fort Carson companies stood on the parade field alongside the 4th I.D. Band and the Fort Carson Mounted Color Guard as Garman, Temple and Edwards each took the podium to reflect on the great work of Evans ACH Soldiers and civilians. Their commitment helped ensure the 4th Infantry Division remains medically ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

“Thank you to the Soldiers standing on the field,” said Garman. “Not only do you look great but you are an awesome reminder of why Evans Medical Command exists.”

Garman continued to express his gratitude and pride to Evans ACH Soldiers and civilians who provide world-class health care to Soldiers, veterans and Family members of Fort Carson and the 4th I.D.

“Dream big. You are our future sergeants major, nurses, physician assistants and physicians,” said Garman. “I hope that Evans will continue to provide all of you with the experience and opportunities to realize your dreams.”

Garman and his family will travel to Washington, D.C. as Garman becomes the Medical Director for Global Health at the Joint Staff.

“Know that you will always have the support of your friends and comrades here in Colorado Springs and the Regional Health Command,” said Tempel. “One Team, One Purpose.”
