Sgt. Christopher Rector, a marksmanship coach supervisor with Range Company, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, speaks to his Marines about the history of Fort Sumter and the Civil War during an educational trip to historic sites in Charleston, S.C., on Feb. 21, 2014. Rector, 25, and his fellow Marines, who train recruits on Parris Island, S.C., spent the day learning more about Fort Sumter, the Civil War and Marines’ involvement in the conflict. Rector is from Summerville, S.C. The trip was part of the unit’s professional military education program, which aims to expand the Marines’ knowledge and skills outside their primary occupational specialties. Fort Sumter is best known as the site of the first military engagement of the Civil War on April 12, 1861.
