Marines with Range Company, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, fold an American flag after it was lowered at Fort Sumter on Feb. 21, 2014, near Charleston, S.C. The Marines spent a day away from training recruits in rifle marksmanship on Parris Island, S.C., to visit historic sites in Charleston. They concluded their outing with an informal colors ceremony at the fort. The trip was part of the unit’s professional military education program, which aims to expand the Marines’ knowledge and skill outside their primary occupational specialties. Fort Sumter is best known as the site of the first military engagement of the Civil War on April 12, 1861.
