Marines with Range Company, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, enter the Fort Sumter National Monument during a military education trip to historic sites in Charleston, S.C., on Feb. 21, 2014, including Battery Park, an artillery area used during the Civil War, and Fort Sumter located in the middle of Charleston Harbor. The Marines spent the day visiting museums and parks around the city to learn more about Fort Sumter, best known as the site of the first military engagement of the Civil War on April 12, 1861. and its significance in American history. The trip was part of the unit’s professional military education program, which aims to broaden the Marines’ knowledge and skill outside their primary occupational specialties.
