Sgt. Robert Magee, left, and Sgt. Michael Martinez, range safety officers with Range Company, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, grab an American flag Feb. 21, 2014, as it is lowered on Fort Sumter near Charleston, S.C. The Marines concluded their educational outing with an informal colors ceremony on top of the fort. Martinez is a 27-year-old native of Challis, Idaho, and Magee, 27, is from Boston. The trip was part of the unit’s professional military education program, which aims to expand the Marines’ knowledge and skill outside their primary occupational specialties. The fort is best known as the site of the first military engagement of the Civil War on April 12, 1861. The Marines of Range Company train recruits and Marines in marksmanship on Parris Island, S.C.
