Leaders from the local community, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and U.S. armed forces grab handfuls of rice and coins May 14 during a dedication ceremony in Guinobatan, Albay province, Philippines. The leaders threw the rice and coins inside of the newly constructed building because they symbolize good luck and fortune. The ceremony was held to officially dedicate the class and comfort rooms built at Dona Mercedes Elementary School as a part of Exercise Balikatan. This year marks the 30th iteration of the exercise, which is an annual Philippines-U.S. military bilateral training exercise and humanitarian civic assistance engagement.
