Latvian National Guard soldier, Pvt. Luize Priedite and Michigan Army National Guard Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Lincoln, the MING state command sergeant major, stand alongside the Fallen Heroes memorial plaque at the Joint Force Headquarters in Lansing, Mich., Oct. 16, 2014. The plaque honors the Michigan National Guard Soldiers who died while supporting Operations Iraq and Enduring Freedom and includes the names of two Latvian soldiers who killed in action during a joint MING/Latvian deployment to Afghanistan. Priedite is a new recruit to the Latvian Defense Force and earned the opportunity to come to the United States to visit military installations when she was selected as the top competitor in a "best ranger" type of event held in Latvia earlier this summer. The event was televised throughout Latvia as a promotional and recruitment incentive for the Latvian National Guard. Latvia is Michigan's partner in the Department of Defense sponsored State Sponsorship Program. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt. Denice Rankin, MING Public Affairs/Released)
