MOTUTAPU ISLAND, Tonga — Lance Cpl. Matthew J. Hanks (Left) takes cover before preparing a demolition charge to clear an obstacle during a live-fire range, July 27, 2016, on Motutapu Island, Tonga, as part of a multi-national, bilateral exercise, between U.S. and Tongan forces, designed to increase interoperability and relations. The service members applied and combined skills practiced during the exercise during a culminating range such as beach insertion, demolition, buddy rushing and high explosive exploitation. Hanks, from St. Louis, Missouri, is a combat engineer with Task Force Koa Moana and is originally assigned to Company A, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
