"Made it to Travis," is typed by Charlyn Ashton in an email to her husband, Terrence, after she and their 7-month-old son, Joshua, arrived at Travis Air Force Base, Calif., from Yokota Air Base, Japan, on March 25. Following the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, the Ashton and hundreds of fellow family members from military bases in Japan voluntarily relocated to the United States after radiation from crippled Japanese nuclear energy plants was detected in some areas. The evacuation effort was part of Operation Pacific Passage.
