171012-N-ZS023-032 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (Oct. 12, 2017) Marine Corps Cpl. Chandler Armstrong, a native of Shreve, Ohio, assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), mans an M2 .50-caliber heavy machine gun on the ship’s flight deck during a transit through the Bab El Mandeb Strait. America is the flagship for the America Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations to reassure allies and partners and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
