The Aisne-Marne Memorial, located southwest of the village of Belleau, France, was built by the American Battle Monuments Commission to commemorate the 1,060 departed who were never found or identified. The oak doors bear the inscription, “The names recorded on these walls are those of American soldiers who fought in this region and who sleep in unknown graves.”
