A life-sized bronze bas-relief of a Marine attacking with a rifle and bayonet stands in the middle of the Belleau Wood in Belleau, France. The plaque describes the battles the Marines fought from June 1-25, 1918, ending with, “May the gallant Marines who gave their lives for Corps and country rest in peace.” The Commandant of the Marine Corps placed the wreaths on Memorial Day this year to honor the fallen.
