Spc. Daniel Bietz of Lincoln, Calif., a combat engineer with the 235th SAPPER Company, 49th Military Police Brigade, shoots from behind a barrier during an event at the Best Warrior’s Competition at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif., Sept. 13, 2011. The event, which had soldiers shooting both the M9 Beretta pistol and the M4 carbine toward multiple, overlapping targets from behind obstacles, was a progression from last year’s traditional range event. “This is stuff you will actually do in combat or if we were activated for a state emergency,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Rob Whittle, the command sergeant major of the 223rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute, who helped developed the event. “We won’t necessarily lie down and shoot 40 targets in combat or in a civil disturbance. We wanted to make this real life.”
