With Army Maj. Gen. Clement Alexander Finley Flagler, commander of the 42nd Division and his staff looking on, Lt. C.L. Michaels reads the order directing the 117th Trench Mortar Battery, 42nd Division, to prepare for redeployment home from Kreuzberg, Germany following the end of occupation duties January 3, 1919, following World War I. The Soldiers originally served in the 3rd and 4th Companies Maryland National Guard’s Coastal Artillery before mobilization. The 42nd Division, known as the Rainbow Division for its inclusion of various National Guard units from across the United States, served as an occupation force following the armistice that ended World War I.
