SAN ANTONIO – (April 22, 2019) Sailors representing several local naval commands, led by Cmdr. Teresa Mitchell, executive officer of Naval Technical Training Center (NTTC) Lackland and NTTC Command Master Chief Sarah Gomez, participated in the annual Pilgrimage to the Alamo during Fiesta San Antonio. The solemn procession of wreath bearers departed from the Vietnam Memorial at the Tobin Center and walked silently to the Alamo. The procession, a tradition since 1925, is comprised of historic, civic, patriotic, military and school groups who pay tribute to the Alamo heroes and the heritage of Texas. The local military commands, along with the 2019 military ambassadors, placed flowers at the Alamo during the pilgrimage. The annual pilgrimage began in 1925 at the initiation of the Alamo Mission Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. During the procession and wreath-laying in Alamo Plaza, the names of the Alamo defenders are read. A memorial service and the playing of Taps concludes the ceremony. Joint Base San Antonio is proud to be part of the diverse and vibrant community of San Antonio also known as Military City USA.
