Unlike today, in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, those working to launch rockets from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station were only 400 feet away from the launch pad, situated in rooms like Firing Room B (above). Protected by windows layered with 45 sheets of glass and working on consoles where the simple flip of a switch could launch a rocket; America’s first satellite was launched from this firing room.
