U.S. Army National Guard Spc. Terry Mills, 51, joined the National Guard four years ago after retiring as a fire department chief. He wasn't ready to give up on a 32-year career in emergency services, and now serves on Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan, as a Medevac crew chief. "When you get the call, your heart jumps in your throat, the adrenaline takes over, and you start running for the helicopter," said Mills, of Brandon, Miss. "All I know is there's a soldier out there who needs us, and we've got to get there as quick as we can."
