U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Mr. William S. Harris, an 87-year-old Montford Point Marine and resident of Molokai, Hawaii received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service during World War II. Harris, was unable to attend the June 27 Congressional Gold Medal Award ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. Marine units across the country are holding local ceremonies to ensure proper presentation and recognition of each Montford Point Marine. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor awarded as the utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
