U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Carolyn Bird, Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, presents her unit coin to Congressional Gold Medal recipient, 87-year-old, Montford Point Marine, Mr. William S. Harris, during an Aug. 27, 2012, ceremony held at Kaneohe Bay. Harris, was unable to attend the June 27 Congressional Gold Medal Award ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor awarded as the utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
