U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jerrand Carr, Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii shakes hands with Congressional Gold Medal recipient, 87-year-old, Montford Point Marine, Mr. William S. Harris, during an Aug. 27, 2012, ceremony held at Kaneohe Bay. Carr thanked Harris for his service and for helping pave the way for African American's equality in the Marine Corps. "Without people like you leading the way the Marine Corps wouldn't be what it is today," said Carr. Harris was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal at Kaneohe Bay because he was unable to attend the June 27 Congressional Gold Medal Award ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor awarded as the utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
