Mr. William S. Harris, an 87-year-old, Montford Point Marine and resident of Molokai, Hawaii places his hand over his heart during the playing of the national anthem during a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony in his honor Aug. 27, 2012, at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. Harris received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service during World War II. He, was unable to attend the June 27 Congressional Gold Medal Award ceremony at the U.S. Capitol therefore Marine units across the country are holding local ceremonies to ensure proper presentation and recognition of each Montford Point Marine. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor awarded as the utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
