U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Carolyn Bird, Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, expresses her appreciation for 87-year-old, Montford Point Marine, Mr. William S. Harris's service to his country. She presented him with the Congressional Gold Medal at an Aug. 27, 2012, ceremony held at Kaneohe Bay. Harris, was unable to attend a June 27 Congressional Gold Medal Award ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor awarded as the utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
