The outbreak of the coronavirus in Iraq generated an unprecedented level of support and cooperation between local governments and civil society. With support from USAID, Technical Working Groups and Social Accountability Groups in Iraq, as well as civil society organizations, mobilized their members by province to sanitize public places and to distribute materials and protective equipment. They even went door-to-door to provide health guidelines to families. These civic groups, trained by the USAID IGPA/Takamul Project on communications and community outreach, ran sustained COVID-19 awareness and sanitation campaigns for months at the height of the pandemic, often using their own resources to fund activities.
