An aerial view of the Portland Air Force Base, Oregon Air National Guard Apron, home of the 142nd Fighter Group (Air Defense) circa 1962. Present are 25 F-89J Scorpions (at least three appear to be painted in “ADC gray”), four T-33A jet trainers and one VC-47 transport. Two single-aircraft alert shelters are seen at the upper right portion of the ramp, likely with alert F-89Js in them. The long building at the top of the photograph is an Oregon Army National Guard aviation facility, soon to be removed as the Reserve Apron construction was completed. (142nd Wing History Archive)
