Instructors at the Aviation Survival Training Centers (ASTC) Pensacola undergo refresher training for the Mk 79 pen flare, June 22. The Mk 79 was developed for pilots and aircrew as a compact multi-use survival flare for survival situations where portability and compact size were key. Periodically personnel must undergo live refresher training to ensure proper deployment and use of their survival equipment. With a student throughput exceeding 14,000 students annually the staff and instructors at NSTI also undergo training to ensure they are using the proper techniques to train students that pass through the ASTCs and out to the Fleet. Naval Survival Training Institute (NSTI), a detachment of NMOTC, specializes in training the pilots, aircrew, and service members who support other specialized communities in survival skills and technique to survive aviation emergencies. Students and service members who complete training and courses will be equipped, with an understanding of stressors placed on the body, the rigors of egress and techniques for survival in situations of hostile and austere environments.
