Aviation Survival Training Center (ASTC) Pensacola staff and instructors set off Mk 124 signal flares on the seawall behind the Naval Survival Training Institute (NSTI) headquarters building aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola, June 22. Periodically personnel must undergo live refresher training to ensure proper deployment and use of their survival equipment. With a student throughput exceeding 14,000 students annually the staff and instructors at NSTI also undergo training to ensure they are using the proper techniques to train students that pass through the ASTCs and out to the Fleet. NSTI, a detachment of NMOTC, specializes in training the pilots, aircrew, and service members who support other specialized communities in survival skills and technique to survive aviation emergencies. Students and service members who complete training and courses will be equipped, with an understanding of stressors placed on the body, the rigors of egress and techniques for survival in situations of hostile and austere environments. Navy Medicine Operational Training Command (NMOTC) is comprised of six nationwide detachments that offer specialized medical training in the fields of aviation, aviation survival, surface and undersea warfare, expeditionary and special operations medicine.
