Drs. Amanda Thornton and Tasha Cantelmo, audiologists from A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center, display examples of historical and current hearing diagnostic and hearing conservation technologies at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland during the July 29, 2023, Military Medical Innovation: The Future is Here event.
One of the technologies on display is a boothless audiometry system, where visitors can test the range and sensitivity of their hearing. This portable, wireless technology takes audiometry out of the traditional sound booth and allows audiologists to assess and diagnose hearing health in the clinic or on the battlefield.
As each person’s sense of hearing may be at a different level, checking to see what hearing protection offers the correct level of protection for each specific individual may reduce noise-induced hearing loss. Thornton and Cantelmo look forward to the DODI 6055.12 initiative, an innovation in hearing conversation which will require this type of fit testing for Department of Defense personnel.
