Dr. Ravi Chaudhary, assistant secretary of the Air Force for energy, installations and environment, exchanges coins with 1st Lt. Mihails Antonous of the Latvian Air Force, during Exercise Northern Strike 2023 at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, Alpena, Michigan, Aug. 10, 2023. Antonous and several members of the Latvian Air Force were conducting joint training with their Michigan National Guard counterparts during the exercise. Michigan and Latvia celebrated 30 years of partnership in 2023. The state and country were among the first participants in the State Partnership for Peace program, which builds relationships between state National Guards and foreign nations. During the exercise, Chaudhary visited several locations around the state, hearing details about agile combat employment operations and locations in the state as well as several innovative projects being developed by the Kelly Johnson Joint All-Domain Innovation Center, a Michigan National Guard program is building partnerships between industry, DoD research agencies and academia. Exercise Northern Strike 2023 is a premier reserve component training event that integrates both U.S. and partner nation readiness training to build interoperability and strengthen partnerships in an all-domain environment.
