U.S. Army Spc. Jose Vega-Silva, a network communications specialist assigned to the Signal, Intelligence and Sustainment Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, poses for a portrait on Fort Riley, Kansas, Sep. 14, 2023. Vega-Silva, who is currently preparing to become a noncommissioned officer, was reassigned to Joint Base Lewis-McCord and will continue to serve in the U.S. Army.

“I was born and raised in Yakima, Washington,” said Vega-Silva. “I came into the Army in July of 2020, straight out of high school. I was eighteen years old at the time. The reason why I joined the Army wasn’t for me, I did it for my family.”
