U.S. Army Spc. Jose Vega-Silva, a network communications specialist assigned to the Signal, Intelligence and Sustainment Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, poses for a portrait on Fort Riley, Kansas, Sep. 14, 2023. Vega-Silva, who is currently preparing to become a noncommissioned officer, was reassigned to Joint Base Lewis-McCord and will continue to serve in the U.S. Army in his hometown of Yakima, Washington.

“The only way you’re ever going to become a great leader is you have to go through those struggles, you’ve got to know what’s good and bad,” said Vega-Silva. “I want to be the leader that I wish I had. Be open-minded, you know. There are a lot of people in this world, from all walks of life with different opinions and different perspectives. Talk to them, get to know them, pick their brain, you know? See how they deal with certain situations. That’s what I’ve learned throughout my time in the Army.”
