U.S. Army Spc. Jose Vega-Silva, a network communications specialist assigned to the Signal, Intelligence and Sustainment Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, poses for a portrait on Fort Riley, Kansas, Sep. 14, 2023. Vega-Silva, who is currently preparing to become a noncommissioned officer, was reassigned to Joint Base Lewis-McCord and will continue to serve in the U.S. Army in his hometown of Yakima, Washington.

“There was this staff sergeant at the time, he was my platoon sergeant,” said Vega-Silva. “At the time, I thought I didn’t want to do this anymore. He took me in and showed me the right path and showed me another side of the Army. I am grateful for that.”
