A waiting station is shown at Camp McCoy, Wis., in 1951. Three courtesy-ride points were erected on the post. They were located on Highway 21 at the "J", "A", and "X" gate entrances. Designed for the convenience of Camp McCoy Soldiers, the units take the enlisted men off the highway, and still allow them to get transportation to nearby towns. Motorists on the highway have been very gracious about stopping at these points to give Soldiers a lift. The structures were erected by the post engineers. The plan of the courtesy ride points was presented to service clubs in nearby towns, and as a result, a courtesy ride point was built by the Sparta Rotary Club, and another was built in La Crosse. Not only did these waiting stations add to the convenience of the service personnel, but the post's overall safety program was greatly accelerated. From 1950-53, Camp McCoy served as a major training installation for Soldiers deploying to the Korean War. (U.S. Army Historical Photo)
