This #FortRileyFriday we continue our look at facilities built to support activities around the old Artillery Post.
Building 404 Holbrook Avenue opened in 1902 as an Artillery Barracks with a capacity of 160 men. It was constructed with #limestone walls and foundation, a slate roof and wood and concrete floors.
Historically, building 404 was named Fremont Hall in honor of Gen. John C. Fremont. Fremont earned the nickname "The Pathfinder" for his multiple westward expeditions. On his third trip west in 1843, Fremont and his men camped at the junction of the Smoky Hill and RepublicanRivers-which we now know as the origin of the Kansas River-prior to embarking on a journey to the "Oregon Country."
Fort Riley Directorate of Public Works (DPW) maintenance records indicate that by 1930 building 404 was being referred to as a Cavalry Barracks. This was a result of the Artillery School at #FortRiley being discontinued following World War I.
Recently, 404 Holbrook has served as temporary office space for various
organizations. As of this post, building 404 is unoccupied.
