This #FortRileyFriday we continue our look at facilities built to support activities around the old Artillery Posts
Building 410 Pershing Avenue opened in 1889 as an Artillery Barracks with a capacity of 162 men. It was constructed with #limestone walls and foundation, a slate roof and wooden floors. A two level addition was constructed on the west side of the building in 1911.
#FortRiley Directorate of Public Works (DPW) maintenance documents show that by 1930 building 410 had been redesignated as a Cavalry Barracks after the Artillery School at Fort Riley was discontinued following World War I.
Building 410 bears the name “Preager Hall” in honor of Captain Ralph Preager who grew up in Claflin, Kans. CPT Preager was commander of Troop C, 26th Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Philippine Scouts. The Scouts were the last U.S. cavalry regiment to engage in horse-mounted warfare. CPT Preager was captured by the Japanese in August 1943 and executed for war crimes in late 1944. A monument to the Philippine Scouts is located at the intersection of Sheridan and Arnold Avenues on Main Post near Cavalry Parade Field.
Since its construction 410 Pershing Avenue has served as a barracks. It still serves in that capacity today.
