A U.S. Army Nurse Corps reenactor marks the 80th anniversary of the Great Escape during a commemoration ceremony near the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war museum in Zagan, Poland, March 24, 2024. The Polish reenactors joined the community event to tell the story of the Army Nurse Corps’ care to allied prisoners liberated at the end of World War II. Many of the Stalag Luft III imprisoned airmen were forced to march 60 miles as the German military fled Russian advancement during the final winter of the war. Tens of thousands of allied prisoners of war suffered from malnourishment alongside numerous maladies, severe cold, snow and ice, and uncertainty of their fate as they were forced to march into inner Germany, with an estimated thousands dying from exposure, disease and exhaustion along the way.
